Harms of smoking

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable ill-health and premature death in London and the UK and has a significant impact on health and social care costs.

Types of vapes

Also known as e-cigarettes, vaporisers or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), nicotine vapes are battery-powered devices that deliver nicotine by heating a solution containing nicotine, flavourings and other additives. They consist of a mouthpiece, battery and cartridge or tank containing the nicotine solution.

Training to help smokers switch to quit

Nicotine vaping is one of the most effective tools for quitting smoking – and smokers are twice as likely to quit smoking if they use a vape compared with other nicotine replacement products, like patches and gum.

OHID’s Local Tobacco Control Profile provides a snapshot of the extent of tobacco use, tobacco related harm, and measures being taken to reduce harm at a local level. These profiles have been designed to help local government and health services to assess the effect of tobacco use on their local populations. Children and young people

Vaping can help adult smokers to quit, and poses significantly less risk than smoking tobacco. However, the use of nicotine vapes by children and young people is both illegal in respect of selling to this group and the long term health impacts are unknown. There is a minimum age of sale for vaping products in the UK. It is illegal to sell nicotine vaping products to anyone under 18 or for adults to buy them on behalf of under-18s.
